What We Had All Suspected About Killmonger’s Shuri Connection Is Confirmed by an MCU Executive

Marvel has confirmed a link between Shuri’s Black Panther outfit and Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger.

Fans of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever knew what to expect from certain aspects, unlike most MCU movies.

Prior to the film’s theatrical debut, Marvel Studios and director Ryan Coogler announced that the sequel would address the passing of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa, introduce viewers to Riri Williams from Ironheart, and make Namor the Sub-underwater Mariner’s home of Talocan his first appearance.

But Marvel also gave fans a sneak peek at a different revelation.

By the time the movie debuted, fans had seen Letitia Wright’s Black Panther suit in its entirety. The first teaser for Black Panther 2 gave keen-eyed audiences a generous glimpse at the sequel’s Black Panther suit.

But despite the suit’s resemblance to Shuri and her distinctive facial markings, MCU fans couldn’t help but notice that its gold accents reminded them of someone else.

Confirmed Connection Between Killmonger and Shuri

Ryan Meinerding, Marvel Studios’ Head of Visual Development, responded positively when asked whether Shuri’s Black Panther costume made reference to any previous Black Panthers, saying that it is “sort of a combination between T’Challa’s suit and Killmonger’s suit.”

Shuri is successful in re-creating the heart-shaped herb from the 2018 film and gaining access to the ancestral plane at a pivotal point in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Erik Killmonger, who Shuri sees instead of her brother, parents, or T’Challa, identifies her desire for vengeance.

Many fans believed Shuri’s gold-accented suit was a nod to her cousin because of Michael B. Jordan’s villain’s influence on her early appearances as the Black Panther, and it turns out that’s exactly what Marvel Studios had in mind.

Meinerding described how the “symbol of that mantle” shifts and character suits “end up meaning something” when discussing the Marvel custom of passing a mantle (like the Black Panther) from one character to another:

“The fact that the characters in Marvel Studios and Marvel comics have these kinds of mantles that can be passed from one character to another is one of the fun things about them. When a new character assumes the mantle, its symbol is altered and changed in some way. The suits we start with end up having some significance, and how they are portrayed in the following movie and the one after that seems to make them useful for continuing the story.”

The suit T’Challa wore in Captain America: Civil War was created by him, but Shuri created both his new suit and Killmonger’s suit in the first Black Panther movie:

“And that ended up being referred to as T’Challa’s suit when we were developing the Black Panther suit for Civil War. I believe T’Challa explained to Shuri in the Black Panther film that this was what he had invented, and I believe Shuri made the Black Panther suit. By the end of the movie, Killmonger has adopted the gold suit as his own, in a way.”

Meinerding explained that there are “subtle nods to each” former suit and “a bit of a throughline” representing Shuri’s brother and “things she needed to learn from Killmonger” in regards to how Marvel referenced both T’Challa and Killmonger.

“Essentially, the outfit that Shuri chooses to wear is a hybrid of T’Challa’s and Killmonger’s outfits. a combination of silver and gold She had to transform into that kind of panther in order to defeat Namor at the very end. The final design makes a few subtle nods to each of those suits, but it really just comes down to the color schemes of silver and gold being the two things. There is a thread running through it that symbolizes her deceased brother and the begrudging lessons Killmonger had to teach her.”

Regarding a few of those “nods,” Killmonger’s outfit has gold jaguar accents, while Shuri’s is primarily black, like T’Challa’s.

However, hers does resemble Killmonger’s in that it is flashier with gold accents and panther claws in addition to adding some of Shuri’s own distinctive flair.

How Shuri Customized Black Panther to Fit Her Style

Shuri’s reference to her brother’s legacy in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was entirely anticipated by the audience.

They weren’t prepared for Killmonger to turn out to be the relative she saw in the Ancestral Plane and the person who inspired her to attack Namor.

This unexpected plot twist explains why Shuri’s first Black Panther outfit was eerily similar to both her brother and her cousin.

After all, as the film’s third act approaches, she resembles Killmonger more.

But just as her battle with Namor is about to turn, she sees her mother, remembers who she is, and, like her brother, decides against taking revenge. She technically doesn’t become a hero until this point.

Her outfit serves as an illustration of how the Black Panther persona has come full circle in this regard.

Similar to how Killmonger adopts the gold outfit Shuri created and makes it “his own by the end of the film,” Shuri did the same by the time her origin story was complete.
