Thor: Love and Thunder Review
Marvel

It’s quite an achievement for a filmmaker to put his stamp of approval on a multi-million dollar studio production film, as Taika Waititi did with Thor: Ragnarok and now with Thor: Love and Thunder. Zack Snyder directs it; James Gunn’s films bear the identifiable fingerprints of their director. But Waititi is in a different league. There are moments in Love and Thunder that feel like a $185 million megaphone dedicated solely to amplifying Taika Waititi’s voice. Reaction to the film will be neatly divided between those who are convinced it can do nothing wrong, and those who increasingly find its brand of chipper matinees and aggressive sentimentality irritating. I find myself leaning towards the latter camp. You Must Read Thor 4: Marvel bans shooting schedule over concerns over Chris Hemsworth’s death

We join Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in the midst of an existential crisis, not completely transformed by his relationship with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). A hammer-wielding Asgardian with an Oxbridge accent moonlights confused with Guardians of the Galaxy. After defeating several alien Hell Owls on a flying bike and destroying a crystal temple, there is a moment when Thor congratulates himself on the job, in the excited voice of the prestigious company he is supposed to protect. Brilliant. You wonder if there is a moment of satirical political commentary hidden in the screenplay. However, this romp pitting Thor against Christian Bale’s cadaverous god-slayer is superficial—it brings greeting-card hard work to themes of love and sacrifice; Harvested internet memes (knife goats) in service of easy laughs.
