The Star of Avengers 5 Expresses Hope for Robert Downey Jr.’s Appearance

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe prepares for two mega-event films, Avengers 5 and 6, many wonders if one of these films will bring back Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man.

Avengers 5 and 6 are expected to bring together not only the current members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes but also legacy heroes from the previous three decades who originated both in and outside of the MCU. While this will undoubtedly result in the most massive team-up movies in the comic book movie history, original MCU actors like Downey Jr. have been high on fans’ wishlists for potential comebacks in the coming years.

Currently, Jonathan Majors is the only actor confirmed for both Avengers 5 and 6. The MCU newcomer has already revealed that his role as Kang the Conqueror is a dream role for him as he explores the villain and his countless Variants.

In an interview with Lifehacker’s Lauren Rouse, Jonathan Majors, star of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, expressed his desire to see Robert Downey Jr. return to the MCU as Iron Man in the next Avengers sequel.

Kang’s involvement opens up a new world of possibilities, especially as the MCU experiments with Multiverses and Variants. When asked if there was “anyone you’re really looking forward to working with or hoping Kang gets to play off of [in Avengers 5],” Majors turned to the most well-known original Avenger.

Majors stated that he is a huge fan of the Iron Man actor, recalling what Downey did for the superhero film culture:

“This is turning out to be a Robert Downey Jr. day, as he keeps popping into my head. I mean, I know he’s an original. He’s one of the originals, after all. I’m a huge fan of his work as an actor. I believe what he did with Iron Man was a gift to the culture as a whole.”

Majors imagined the two characters interacting on multiple levels, describing Downey’s portrayal of Iron Man as “so fascinating” because of the energy the actor brought to the Avengers team:

“I would love to play opposite him on the screen to see how our actions and character-building philosophies, just on a personal level, mesh. Iron Man fascinates me because, you know, I find him to be such a fascinating artist. His portrayal of Iron Man is incredibly charming, and he embodies the Avengers’ spirit and worldview to a T. Kang, in my opinion, is a product of a different time.

Because of their opposing ideologies, he already has an idea of what a meeting between Kang and Tony Stark would entail:

It would be really intriguing to watch those two interact and converse for a while.

He also expressed his gratitude for the “great deal of responsibility” that comes with playing Kang, which enables him to develop as an actor to incredible heights.

He admits that his anticipation for his upcoming role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has him barely able to think about Avengers 5, but he adores the chance he has to continue to develop “the mythology of Kang” in the future:

“I mean, I play for a franchise. Being in Kang is a very privileged position with a lot of responsibility. And as a result, I have the chance to develop my artistic abilities to their fullest and, selfishly, to contribute to audiences and the other members of my team. So Kang Dynasty feels to me like it has the potential to expand the mythology of Kang and to grow his curiosity of Kang that much more, which is extremely exciting. However, I can’t even think about it because I’m so excited about [Quantumania] at the moment.”

Does Robert Downey Jr. Plan to Join the MCU Again?

Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man has been replaced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) over the past few years, with the actor’s final appearance coming in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Even with numerous allusions to the first Avenger, it has grown into one of the most significant deaths that have actually been carried through in all of Phase 4, so it is not surprising that Jonathan Majors wants Downey back for more action.

Many fans already believe that one of the upcoming Avengers films will reintroduce Downey to the action, allowing Kang to interact with at least a variant of the hero who served as the catalyst for the MCU’s entire plot.

Given how many other Avengers 6 variants Marvel is already considering, these would probably be the best ways to use Downey to keep his death from Endgame impactful. Downey should at the very least be considered for an appearance.
