The Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn reveals the film’s hidden protagonist.

James Gunn claims that there are other heroes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 besides Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord.

Peter Quill may have been the first member of the team that viewers met, but the Guardians of the Galaxy series has always been an ensemble.

Fans have witnessed the team’s development as individuals and a unit through two films, appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, and most recently The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

Gunn is most motivated to finish the story of the franchise’s secret hero as Phase 5’s Vol. 3 attempts to wrap up their individual arcs.

The Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn acknowledged to Empire that Star-Lord will continue to be affected by the death of Gamora in the upcoming threequel:

“Peter is, in my opinion, a bit of a mess. I believe he has severe detachment problems.”

The primary reason for Vol. 3 is Rocket Raccoon, as he always has been, even though Quill’s loss will be addressed.

The director asserts that Sean Gunn and Bradley Cooper’s cranky, cantankerous Rocket was “always the secret protagonist” of the Guardians movies:

“He has always been the unassuming hero of the Guardians of the Galaxy films in my eyes. Rocket has never failed to act kindly in a motion picture. He has only ever done things for his pals. In the traditional sense of the word, he is not a hero. It was extremely vital to me to tell his story.”

Rocket’s MCU journey has been emotional and unselfish, as mentioned by Gunn.

He may have an arrogant exterior and a fondness for sarcasm, but he always comes through for his pals. After Thanos’ snap, he even joined the Avengers.

His past, though, is the one that fans know the least about of all the Guardians.

The filmmaker asserts that his comeback to the MCU is due to the fact that he “wanted to end Rocket’s tale” because Gunn is now the new co-head of DC Studios and Vol. 3 appears to be the franchise’s final installment:

“People frequently enquire as to why I returned to complete the tale. It’s because I had to wrap up the narrative. Additionally, I had to complete Rocket’s tale.”

Nothing Else Is Like Rocket But Rocket

Rocket has been the true protagonist of the Guardians series, showing sympathy for Thor in Infinity War, grieving over the loss of Groot, and more.

The Guardians of the Galaxy are a group of misfits that made the decision to become heroes, as the 2014 movie established; Rocket’s tale fits within that description as well.

The issue is that Rocket doesn’t view himself in that way and is still struggling to accept his past and who he is.

Fans have seen from Vol. 3’s promotion that the threequel specifically seeks to examine that.

Therefore, it doesn’t sound like Rocket will continue to be the Guardians’ “hidden protagonist” after his hero’s journey is fully realized and finished when Vol. 3 is released this May.
