The Director of Stranger Things 5 Explains That Deadpool 3 Will Slightly Conflict With It

There appears to be a conflict between Shawn Levy’s directing responsibilities for Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 and his work on Netflix’s fifth and final season of Stranger Things.

The popular sci-fi horror series stunned viewers earlier this summer when it introduced Vecna to the world and had him terrorize Hawkins, Indiana.

Levy has continued this practice every season and directed the third and fourth of the most recent nine episodes. In addition to producing, he also participates in the show’s production.

In addition to the immensely popular series, Levy will work with Ryan Reynolds once again on the upcoming Deadpool 3, which he will direct. Hugh Jackman’s planned return as Wolverine will increase the pressure associated with that film.

Even though it will be fantastic to have Levy’s skills join the MCU, it appears that his upcoming work on Deadpool 3 will prevent him from contributing as much as he would like to the final season of Stranger Things.

Director Shawn Levy, who also directed Stranger Things and Deadpool 3, discussed how his upcoming Marvel Studios project will unavoidably conflict with his work on the popular Netflix series in an interview with Collider.

As Levy stated, “one of the first conversations [he] had with Ryan Reynolds and Marvel” occurred during his time on Stranger Things.

“In fact, one of the first discussions I had with Ryan Reynolds and Marvel when we started talking about Deadpool was the fact that there would unavoidably be a crossover with the final season of Stranger Things in some way and at some point. Furthermore, I really wanted to direct at least one episode of the final season.”

He added that he “knew the Duffers’ show was special when [he] first read the pilot script:”

“It truly means a lot to me. A successful show is like discovering a unicorn in the woods, according to what little I know about the entertainment business and popular culture. I knew the Duffers’ show was special when I first read the pilot script, but none of us could have predicted the cultural impact it would have—or the way it has grown into a full-fledged franchise brand. It’s exciting, but I also want to stress that we don’t let the show’s popularity as a blockbuster divert us; rather, we concentrate on producing outstanding episodes, one by one, scene by scene, moment by moment. We are acutely aware that this is what initially made Stranger Things popular.”

Levy emphasized how “both epic and very emotional” this final performance will be when asked what fans can anticipate from it:

“This final season will be epic and very emotional, as Brothers have already hinted at in public. When we sat there and listened to the two-hour pitch-out for the storyline of this final season, I don’t believe there was a dry eye in the room by the time the brothers were finished. Because every single person who has worked on this show has had their lives changed, I believe that making it will also be a pretty damn emotional experience. Anyway, the writing is going fantastically, and we can’t wait to start the production process in 2019.”

Deadpool 3 is currently scheduled to begin filming in May of next year. Although the exact return date of Stranger Things is unknown, early 2019 is probably a good guess.

Shawn Levy would have just enough time to fit in an episode at the beginning of the season. The director might even wait until after his subsequent fight with Ryan Reynolds to board the Hawkins train, given how long Stranger Things was in production for its fourth season.

Levy has a lot on his plate, including directing Deadpool’s entry into the MCU and the final season of Stranger Things, one of Netflix’s most popular originals. I’m hoping he’ll be able to meet both of the world’s expectations.

Deadpool 3 is scheduled to hit theatres on November 8, 2024, while the release date for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is not yet known.
