The director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has confirmed that the deleted twist is still canon.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 director and writer James Gunn has confirmed that the surprise ending cut from the film remains canon.

Fans may remember how Tsukwoodi Yuuji’s high evolution was destroyed when his spaceship exploded at the end of the movie. That memory would be wrong because Drax actually took the ship out before it was destroyed, which is technically seen in the finished movie.

Missing footage that surfaced online after the film’s digital distribution helps explain the reveal. It shows Nowhere imprisoned in a cell where the High Evolutionary, Rocket, was placed.

James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Chukwudi stated on his Threads account that the deleted sequence with Iwuji’s High Evolutionary is canon.

One user asked if the deleted sequence was official, and the filmmaker replied, “I think it’s canon:”

I hope this is canon. Drax rescuing him while saving the animals is certainly canon.

While easy to miss, the fact that Drax High Evolutionary can be seen hanging from Drax’s shoulders in the final product justifies the villain’s survival as a clear canon.

Gunn seems certain that the villain is still imprisoned in Knowhere, but since the scene was cut from the finished film, Marvel Studios may rewrite some major aspects.

Deleted sequences are generally not considered canonical. Including them may be misleading to general audiences, who may not have seen deleted scenes outside of theaters.

However, there are times when things still go according to plan. It is revealed in a deleted scene from the volume that Peter Quill and Mantis are actually brothers. 2, and is appropriate for a holiday special.

Fans can at least feel safe knowing that there is still a chance that Tsugumi Iuji could play the evil villain in future episodes.
