When will Disney+ release The Amazing Spider-Man 2?
In April 2021, Sony and Disney reached an agreement whereby the studio’s Spider-Man-related films would join other Marvel productions on Disney+. This will include old Spider-Man movies from Sony’s library, as well as new ones starting in 2022 after spending some time on Netflix.
The Spider-Man trilogy written by Tobey Maguire and The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) has been available to stream for a long time; It debuted on Netflix and recently appeared on Disney+. However, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was lost during this trip.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is currently available on Starz in the US, with Disney+ likely buying it to continue building its library of web headers after the current streaming deal for the Andrew Garfield sequel expires.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is now available on Disney+ in Canada and a few other countries, so it’s likely that it will be available there eventually. While the exact date is currently unknown, Sony guarantees more Spider-Man movies will be added to Disney+ later this year, making late 2023 a distinct possibility:
Later this year, several Sony Pictures movies and TV shows are expected to be released in the United States.
However, there’s no guarantee that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and other unreleased movies will survive on Disney+ in the long run, even when they do. After all, just ten months after it was added to Disney+ in the UK, five Spider-Man movies have been removed from the service.
Complex rights case affecting Spider-Man\
Sony owns the rights to the Spider-Man movie and its associated cast of characters, unlike the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This indicates that the studio has sole authority to create films featuring the character, and full control over how they are distributed in terms of streaming and home video releases.
That said, Sony has been more willing to work with Disney of late, as evidenced by the deal they signed in 2015 to bring Spider-Man to the MCU. The deal allows Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to appear in a few more MCU movies, while Marvel Studios helps Sony produce the Spider-Man movies.
This is likely to remain the case for many years to come, as long as the two do not face other major consequences, as there is no indication that these rights will change anytime soon. A long-term collaboration between the two studios is expected after a Sony executive hinted at “lots of opportunities” with Marvel Studios.
