Many other behind-the-scenes stories were included in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, but one that stuck out was the inclusion of 6’5 “The on-set model for the title role was the actress Maliah Arrayah. The costume designer for the Disney+ show has since clarified why the actress is so important to the project’s success.

During the length of the show on Disney+, the 6’5″ “actress also provided fans a sneak peek into her enjoyable off-screen interactions with main actor Tatiana Maslany and actor Tim Roth from Abomination.

In an interview with Marvel, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law costume designer Ann Foley discussed the casting of 6’5″ actress Maliah Arrayah and how she aided the VFX team visually.

When asked about the process of clothing a character who occasionally isn’t just a human body in the show, Foley acknowledged that “it was enjoyable” but that it was “challenging” to distinguish between Maslany and Arrayah on-set:

Marvel: “As a character who is half an actress and half a computer-generated person who is also an actress but is a different size, scale, and all those other things, She-Hulk presented a fascinating challenge. What steps does the process of figuring out how to outfit someone whose body isn’t always just a human body take?”

Foley: “It excelled. To be completely honest, it was enjoyable yet difficult to figure out the arithmetic because Marvel placed a lot of importance on it. What math is there, for instance? The distinction between Maliah, our lighting or visual reference, and Tatiana.”

Ryan Meinerding, Head of Visual Development at Marvel Studios, played a crucial part in determining She-Hulk size so that a muscle suit could be made for the on-set reference actress, according to what Foley later revealed:

Right, so if an actress was taller, who would she be, right?

Foley: “I believe she is just 6’5″, 6’5″, or 6’6.” Once Malia had been cast, Ryan Meinerding, Marvel’s head of visual development, or Vis Dev as I like to refer to them, got to work. He developed She-hulk’s “body musculature,” so to speak, and after determining the size and composition of She-Hulks muscles, used digital data to design a muscle suit specifically for Maliah. Once we received the muscular suit, we knew we could do those math problems much more easily.

Foley continued, using the courtroom scene from the Titania serves as an illustration of how Maliah was essential in determining where such clothing “might naturally stretch”:

“So, knowing how the situation would play out, we would construct the costume, such as the opening courtroom suit, to fit Tatiana. Jen Walters, played by Tatiana, attends court without anticipating having to perform like She-Hulk there. She isn’t donning a suit that can stretch, thus. In order to sort of see where that would naturally extend, we then take that outfit and have Maliah try it on. How short would the skirt be? where the leg would normally rip, you know? How high on the arms, you know, in the arms, the sleeves would go. Where would it split apart, at that shoulder point, you know? All of the information was quite informative and intriguing. All of it was genuine. Those were some major pressure points.

The 6-foot-5 actress was instrumental in developing She-Hulk for the episode, the Marvel costume designer said as she expressed gratitude to her.

“We were therefore fortunate to have Malia’s gift of intelligence to solve those problems. Every time Malia worked, VFX would scan her in costume so they could use that data to help build She-Hulk.”

Will the 6-foot-5 On-Set Actress for She-Hulk Return?

The most recent remarks from Ann Foley confirmed the significance of Maliah Arrayah to the creation of She-Hulk and demonstrated that the 6-foot-5-inch actress is the ideal choice for an on-set reference (She-Hulk height in the comics is 6’7″).

This demonstrates that Marvel doesn’t just use CGI. It is unknown if the studio would choose to use an on-set reference actor or actress, although She-Hulk: Attorney at Law clearly demonstrated that this tactic is effective.

It’s safe to infer that Arrayah will reprise her She-Hulk role in a hypothetical second season and upcoming MCU projects based on Foley’s raving remarks about her.

The company is positioned to strike the correct balance in blending practical effects and CGI to achieve a situation that benefits everyone as Marvel grows with more projects in Phase 5.
