The final Disney+ MCU show of 2021 has a brand-new poster that was never used, according to a concept artist for Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye.
In the fall of 2021, Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld collaborated to bring Clint Barton’s first standalone story to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film continued the hero’s post-Avengers: Endgame saga and introduced Kate Bishop to the MCU. The show gave viewers a thrilling new Christmas story within the Marvel canon while drawing heavily from Matt Fraction’s mid-2010s run on Hawkeye in comic books.
Hawkeye employed some intriguing strategies with its marketing and promotional materials, as has been the case with all MCU projects, teasing intriguing new characters, and even celebrating high-profile newcomers like the Kingpin.
But now, more than a year after the show’s premiere, a well-known Marvel comic artist has provided a fresh perspective on one stunning poster that went unnoticed.

Artist of the Hawkeye comic on an old poster
On Twitter, comic book artist David Aja posted a picture of an unfinished Hawkeye poster with Clint Barton, Kate Bishop, and Lucky the Pizza Dog in the center. The two heroes’ main colors, which appear later in the episode, are honored as the group travels down a snowy New York City street with purple-hued buildings.
Aja mentioned that his work was compensated, but he also mentioned that Disney+ didn’t use it for the show’s initial promotion cycle:
“A Hawkeye poster I created for the canceled television show. (No conspiracies, please; yes, they used the idea for a poster and yes, I was paid for it.)”
A fan complimented Aja on his work and mentioned that the poster was used “in a game called Topps Marvel Collect,” but Aja didn’t feel the same happiness when he responded, “No idea about that.”
It wasn’t until another fan shared a photo of them wearing a shirt from San Diego Comic-Con 2022 with the poster on the front that Aja realized it had been used for a T-shirt. Initially, Aja had assumed it hadn’t been used at all for Hawkeye’s promotion.
Conflicting Opinions on Hawkeye’s Promotional Material
David Aja didn’t have it easy during Hawkeye’s run because Disney used a lot of his work from the comics without giving him proper credit. As a result, some fans even started to boycott the show. That doesn’t diminish how amazing his work appears, which pays homage to New York winters while ensuring that the show’s two superheroes and their super dog are given ample opportunity to shine.
It’s unclear why this poster wasn’t used at any point during Hawkeye’s run, other than on t-shirts and in games that were MCU-related, but it undoubtedly would have received praise if the circumstances had been different. By giving Hawkeye the long-desired solo story, the artwork did its best to pay homage to the character’s comic book origins.
Posters like this one will help remind MCU fans of all the success Renner and Steinfeld had in their first joint projects as they wait for word on whether Hawkeye will receive a second season.
