As Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse prepares for its theatrical release, the film’s director has revealed the ending of the movie.
With only a few weeks to go until its release, Spider-Verse 2 will attempt to build on the popularity of the 2018 animated film Into the Spider-Verse.
The movie is slated to be “a love story” set in the multiversal antics of Miles Morales and Spider-Queen, starring Shamik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld, respectively.
However, not everything will be resolved Across The Spider-Verse coming out next year, as the middle chapter of the story will have a final conclusion.

A Significant Spider-Verse 2 Spoiler
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse co-director Kemp Powers has revealed a major spoiler about the ending of the upcoming animated sequel.
According to Powers, the film “ends on a bit of a cliffhanger”, a “satisfying setup for what’s to come in the third film:”
“Spider-Verse is a standalone movie throughout, but it definitely comes to an abrupt end. It’s a good cliffhanger, IMO. We think it’s a satisfying collection because you want people to be curious about what comes next, until what happens”. in the third movie.”
“It helps that we know this is the second part of a three-part story,” he said, as Spider-Verse 2 wraps up the plot.
Also, it helps that we know this is Part 2 of a 3 part story. You approach it a little bit differently because you already know that the third story is definitely going to happen. This movie has a lot of important characters and it also has a story arc of its own that we need to finish.
The Spider-Verse director compared the upcoming film to the cliffhanger of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, expressing his hope that “This is our empire”:
“The Empire Strikes Back” left me very fulfilled. We can only believe that this is our “Empire”.
This empire analogy has been done before. In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Across the Spider-Verse writer-producer, Christopher Miller told us that “The Empire Strikes Back feels like the Spider-Verse franchise:”
In our opinion, “Across” has been compared to The Empire Strikes Back in the “Spider-Verse” series. It takes you into uncharted territory and has an emotional ending that makes you watch the third one right away. So, this is our “Empire”.
“The Empire Strikes Back” by Spider-Verse
With a third movie already planned, a cliffhanger ending in Spider-Verse isn’t entirely unexpected, but it’s concerning that the people involved in the production would give it such a forceful ending.
It’s a sign of the faith these creators must have in their work that the film openly boasts that it “[ends] where you’ll have to see the third movie.”
Beyond the Spider-Verse, the end of the franchise will undoubtedly be Infinity War. Moviegoers know how it ended.
The analogies with the empire being created are also intriguing. Comparing yourself to not only one of the best sequels ever made but also one of the best movies ever made is a lofty statement.
The creators of one of the most beloved animated movies of all time, Into the Spider-Verse, believe the team can live up to those expectations.
The unity of the empire can be deeper than the skill of the ending and the suspense aspect. Spider-Verse 2 will explore a darker land, as Empire is one of the darker Star Wars movies.
Former Across the Spider-Verse animator Ere Santos admitted that he (and a large part of the team) believed it was “not a kids’ movie,” and that the Empire-like narrative context might be to blame.
On Friday, June 2, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hits theaters with a cliffhanger.
