Exciting News From Executive Regarding Sony’s Upcoming Spider-Man TV Shows

The forthcoming expansion of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which will begin with Amazon’s Silk: Spider Society, has been addressed by the president of Sony Pictures Television.

Sony Pictures is still working hard to make the most of its collection of Marvel characters in odd spin-offs, even as it continues to collaborate with Marvel Studios to explore Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man inside the parameters of the MCU.

These have all so far been big-screen projects like Venom, Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and El Muerto, but Sony is getting ready to expand its superhero franchise to television, much like the rest of Hollywood.

Amazon’s Silk: Spider Society, which centers on Korean-American hero Cindy Moon after she receives the same spider bite as Peter Parker, better known as Spider-Man, will be the first project on that front.

While there are currently few specifics on that initiative, a Sony executive recently provided an interesting update on how these shows will factor into things.

Sony Pictures Television President Katherine Pope provided an exciting update on the plans to bring more of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSMU) content to television in the upcoming years when speaking with Deadline.

In order to make sure their Marvel programs are “in lockstep with them” and are being “[done] at the same level,” the Sony president vowed they will be “working really closely with… the motion picture group”:

“This is another illustration of how closely we collaborated with Tom Rothman, Sanford Panitch, and the motion picture group to ensure that we were on the same page and carrying out our tasks at the same standard as they did. We want to make sure that we are performing at that level since they have done such an amazing job with their franchise.”

In November 2022, it was confirmed that Angela Kang, the creator of The Walking Dead, would be overseeing the Silk: Spider Society television series on Amazon. A “suite of live-action television series based on the Sony Pictures world of Marvel characters” was to follow the Spider-Man spin-off.

Kang is “absolutely wonderful and a total pro,” according to Pope, who expressed her delight about working with her:

“It’s a major concern for all of us here, but especially for me. I’ve always admired Angela Kang, so I’m beyond thrilled to be collaborating with her on Silk. She is simply wonderful and an absolute pro.

In an interview with TV Line, Spider-Verse filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who will executive produce Silk: Spider Society, praised Kang and said that “she adores these characters:”

“We highly respect and admire Angela’s vision and ingenuity since she is a pro’s pro. Additionally, she is a tonne of fun. She adores these characters, and we are extremely grateful to have the opportunity to collaborate with her to share Cindy Moon’s story with the world.

Kang mentioned how thrilled she was to work on “diversity, character-forward, watercooler shows” after joining Amazon Studios for this Marvel project.

“I’m ecstatic to be a part of the Amazon Studios family for my future professional endeavors. I’m looking forward to working on diverse, character-driven watercooler shows with the executive team for a worldwide audience, and I’m especially eager to take on my first challenge: bringing Korean-American heroine Silk to life on film.

When Will Sony Release the First Spider-Man Series?

SONY

It shouldn’t come as a major surprise to learn that Sony is working to guarantee that its Spider-Man spin-offs are “done at the same level” of production quality and graphics as the blockbusters. After all, in the era of streaming, expensive blockbuster series have replaced less expensive ones as the standard.

Sony’s Marvel shows for Amazon will probably end up tying into its broader world with Venom and the rest of the group, much as the MCU’s Disney+ series. Although it’s still unclear exactly where Sony is taking that narrative, particularly after Morbius hinted at a potential crossover between bad guys and anti-heroes.

According to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe’s current theatrical schedule, Kraven the Hunter will debut in October, while El Muerto, Madame Web, and an unidentified third film that may be Venom 3 will follow in 2024. And now that these series have been added, Sony will likely have three or more Marvel projects coming out each year.

The development of Spider Society should be moving more quickly now that a showrunner has been recruited, however, the program may still be a while off. It’s presently unclear how far along the script and other preparations may be, making it difficult to predict when the film will be released.

Fans will have to wait until at least 2025 to watch Silk: Spider Society on Amazon, based on the present indications. Hopefully, that’s just the start of bigger things with further Marvel shows set in this universe, which will eventually result in these characters making the jump to the big screen.

One can only hope that Silk and Sony’s upcoming television projects will fare better than the SSMU’s current slate of motion pictures. Having Spider-Lord Verses and Miller on board and a creative showrunner like Angela Kang surely speaks toward great things, even though it’s too soon to say for sure.

A firm release date has not yet been announced by Silk: Spider Society. Kraven the Hunter, which opens in theatres on October 6, will be the following Marvel debut on Sony.
