Disney and Marvel have recently added a variety of genres to the MCU, such as “Supernatural action-adventure” for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and “Science Fiction, Comedy, and Super Hero, Action-Adventure” for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

Now that Phase 5 has begun, Marvel has classified its most recent blockbuster film in a slightly unexpected manner.

Surprising New Genres in Ant-Man 3

The subgenres for the most recent MCU theatrical film were revealed by Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development Stephen Broussard in the Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania official press release.

Ant-Man 3 is categorized by Broussard as an “epic sci-fi war movie,” despite the fact that Disney previously referred to it as a “Sci-Fi Adventure” in a press release:

There are numerous things in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It’s first and foremost a family adventure. A family of Super Heroes is essentially drawn into an adventure within the Quantum Realm in this tale, and within that, it develops into an epic sci-fi war movie and a coming-of-age tale. One movie with a lot of various stuff in it.

Even though the MCU has had a war movie of its own in the form of Captain America: The First Avenger (and a few entries with “war” in the title, like Captain America: Civil War), fans were expecting the franchise to continue with its light and comedic tone. Therefore, the news that a third Ant-Man film will be a sci-fi war movie comes as quite a surprise to them.

The fact that the Ant-Man 3 sequel seems to be depicting an all-out conflict may be a sign of the power Kang will bring to the film and to his upcoming appearances.

Cassie Lang is now 18 years old, and the director Peyton Reed said that her relationship with her father is still “an important aspect of the Ant-Man movies” while talking about the family values in this film. Although this movie compels him to discover what she’s like as a more mature adult, Scott’s primary motive is to continue being a good father:

“The relationship between Scott and Cassie Lang, now 18 years old, has always been a key component of the Ant-Man movies. His desire to be a good father to his daughter drives him most in life, yet circumstances prevent him from seeing her regularly. In this film, Scott has some difficulty because Cassie is now a young adult, but Scott still sees her as a child. She is also idealistic. She lives by her own rules, which create some really fantastic dramatic and humorous tension.”

As Kang assumes center stage, head writer Jeff Loveness talked about how epic this film will be, pitting the most unexpected hero against “an Avengers-level threat”:

“We were so pleased to start working on this grand, ambitious adventure film with the Super Hero you wouldn’t expect to see in it when Peyton [Reed] and I first met. The plan was to pit Scott, Hope, and their families against Kang the Conqueror, the MCU’s upcoming big villain, who posed an Avengers-level threat from the start.”

Ant-Man 3 Focuses Mostly on Family

As Scott Lang strives to be the greatest father he can be for Cassie, who has been his inspiration to do good since the beginning, the family has always been a major topic in the Ant-Man series. Now, as they fight alongside each other for the first time, it appears that those themes are more prevalent than ever as Cassie develops into a superhero in her own right and also reaches adulthood.

On the other hand, it comes as quite a shock to discover that Ant-Man 3 is being categorized as a “sci-fi war movie,” with Kang the Conqueror starting his quest to conquer the whole Multiverse.

His abilities were initially hinted at in the second full teaser for the film, and he’ll prove to be just as formidable a threat as any Scott Lang or his family have encountered in the MCU thus far. When compared to the battle against Thanos in Infinity War, Kang’s conflict with Ant-Man and the other Avengers may be more drawn out given his apparent willingness to go to “war.”

It might also be a sign of what Kang would bring to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a hint at the Multiversal War hinted at in Loki.

These new genres should offer fans a solid idea of the emotion and drama that the MCU will provide as the Multiverse Saga enters its middle Phase, even though most of the Ant-Man 3 plot is still being kept a secret.
