Nebula Is Getting Ready for Guardians 3

A new still from May’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released by USA Today on Wednesday, giving fans a better look at Nebula’s upgraded arm.
The arm appears less robotic than the rest of Nebula’s bionic body parts, opting for a sleek, almost chainlike design over a retro-robotic appearance.
The upgrade was visible in the first trailer for the new film, though it was slightly obscured by the camera angle and Nebula’s placement at the tail end of the group.

The new piece of technology differs significantly from the one seen in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, implying that it was acquired between the events of the two projects.
Is the Arm More Representative?

Nebula has revealed a rocky history with upgrades and body modification in previous appearances, having been forcibly upgraded by her father, Thanos, after losing fights with her sister Gamora.
Perhaps the new arm represents Nebula regaining control of her body, removing a relic of her father’s trauma and replacing it with something she chose. Or, less optimistically, Nebula may be forced to relive some of her trauma by having someone else replace a part of her body.
In any case, fans already know the film will likely deal with the effects of body modification in some way, as the trailer reveals that Rocket Raccoon’s backstory will be explored in some detail. Rocket did not choose to be born the way he was, according to what is known so far about his backstory.
