Ms. Marvel’s Best Advice From Samuel L. Jackson

Iman Vellani, who plays Ms. Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, received one piece of advice from veteran actor Samuel L. Jackson that she has since heeded.

Vellani made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series, which told the origin story of Kamala Khan’s acquisition of cosmic powers and the beginning of her journey toward realizing her dream of becoming a superhero.

The actress made history as the youngest lead in an MCU project when the show debuted when she was just 19 years old. Since it was her first acting role, Vellani previously admitted that other cast members in the franchise—like Chris Pratt of Guardians of the Galaxy—helped her get used to being on camera.

Currently signed up to appear in The Marvels in 2023 alongside Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris, Vellani has revealed that she has received assistance from one of the biggest movie stars in the world, not just another MCU actor.

Iman Vellani, who plays Ms. Marvel, revealed the one important piece of advice Samuel L. Jackson gave her while they were filming The Marvels in an interview with AP Entertainment.

The Ms. Marvel actress claimed that when Jackson visited the set, she had a “whole laundry list of questions,” but his insight into “the best characteristic of an actor” had the greatest bearing:

“I recall having a long list of questions for Sam Jackson while he was on the set. And I was asking him, “What do you think is an actor’s best quality?” or something comparable. He then said, “Patience.” Yes, Sam, you’re right, I said. Patience.’”

Vellani continued by describing how she used his advice while working on the movie and how it helped her better understand the procedure:

“After that, I never again voiced a complaint. You must understand that there are many moving parts in the job if anything took longer than five minutes, ten minutes, or came to set but didn’t even work.”

The actress also said that the process of filming a movie is “like a little world,” with many different elements coming together to create one cohesive whole:

It feels like a tiny world that is constantly moving around you, and you are unsure of where you should be. Therefore, you simply have to accept it and show appreciation for the sheer number of people and bodies involved in producing this one, two-hour, or whatever movie.

Before Ms. Marvel hit theatres, Vellani praised fellow MCU co-star Brie Larson for being warm and encouraging, even disclosing that the Captain Marvel actress contacted her and requested to speak with her just two days after she had been cast as Kamala Khan:

“On June 24, I received a cast. Two days later, [casting director] Sarah Finn texts me to say that Brie wants to meet you. I asked, “What?” We had a brief Zoom call the following day. Having her hold my hand the entire time was incredibly pleasant. She made herself so readily available to me, so I made sure to use her as much as I could.

Despite being overjoyed to play the lead in Ms. Marvel, Vellani also mentioned some drawbacks, but went on to explain how Larson helped her get through those as well:

“Being the only superhero on a set can cause a feeling of loneliness. She undoubtedly addressed that in Captain Marvel. It’s a little unsettling for me that I was the only person there dressed as a superhero. When you’re wearing the shiny piece of Spandex, everyone will be staring at you.”

After speaking with Larson, who assured her that “she’s gone through the same thing,” Vellani eventually remarked that it was “great” to feel less alone.

“You feel a little intimidated and insecure. You’re acting weirdly with your hands while wearing this crazy costume. Brie informed me that she had experienced the same thing. I thought, “Great. not alone This is normal, and you’re going to experience a lot of body pain, she said.
