Morbius receives “awards” from the Razzies for worst actor and other categories.

Sony Pictures’ Morbius received some of the worst reviews of 2022 and was one of the least popular movies, but it was nominated for awards at the mock Razzies ceremony.

Morbius, which debuted in April 2022 and has since become the punchline of the superhero movie genre, has had more bad points than almost any film in recent memory. Things became progressively worse as fans and critics blasted it from every perspective, starting with its opening weekend box office haul, which was the lowest of any MCU film in history.

With the brand now having to earn back fans who have lost faith in the firm after the series released a film that was lambasted for its production, script, and even visual effects, this negativity has put Sony’s Spider-Man Universe in a major bind going forward.

And now, with numerous nominations for accolades that Sony most surely doesn’t want on its proverbial mantle, that hostility has come back to the fore.

Sony Sinks to New Lows With Morbius Razzie Nominations

Morbius
Marvel Studios

At the end of the day, it only seems sensible that Morbius has been nominated for a few Razzies. Coming out of the Razzies with only five nominations can almost be classified as a success, in that it didn’t wind up being any worse, especially considering that the movie became the punchline of every movie discussion in 2022.

The nominations that Morbius did win provide insight into what audiences thought of the film after Jared Leto delivered a performance that disappointed many, especially after he invested so much time and effort in promoting the film for two whole years.

And with a script that mixed poor humor from decades ago with a formulaic story and no great performances (apart from Matt Smith’s memorable dancing moment), Sony’s most recent superhero effort couldn’t compete in a crowded genre.

Morbius can only hope to avoid leaving the Razzies with too many wins when the studio that actually produces a movie this horrible tries to preserve face by re-releasing it in theatres despite knowing it bombed.

Now that Kraven the Hunter is scheduled for a late 2023 release before El Muerto and Madame Web arrive in 2024, Sony is looking to get back on its feet with fresh releases over the next couple of years. Fans won’t soon forget about this scene from Morbius, but perhaps the trio can avoid receiving a Razzie.

Morbius is currently for sale anywhere that movies are sold and it can be watched on Netflix.
