Monica Rambeau’s superhero identity is FINALLY revealed in Captain Marvel 2

Monica Rambeau, a Marvel superhero with a number of monikers, has not yet had her official MCU superhero name confirmed.

In July’s Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, Monica, who was first given abilities in WandaVision, will make another appearance as she continues her development as an adult character.

There was evidence of Monica employing either of her two most frequently used identities—Spectrum or Photon—in Marvel universe universes outside of the MCU (she did wear Captain Marvel for a while).

The Marvels’ three main characters appeared in a children’s book earlier this month that referred to Monica as Spectrum. However, Monica’s current superhero moniker, Photon, was reinstated in a December comic by Eve L. Ewing and Michael Sta. Maria.

As Monica anticipates her return to the MCU, her true superhero name may have finally been revealed.

In The Marvels, what will Monica be called?

Monica Rambeau: Photon comic creator Eve L. Ewing revealed during a Black Comic Lords online interview that Monica Rambeau’s character name in the upcoming Marvel Studios film The Marvels would be Photon.

The most essential information Ewing provided was that she “did not choose for her to be dubbed Photon in this comic:”

“Bear in mind that, as you all are aware, communication between the MCU and the publishing side isn’t always frequent. Let me put it this way: I’ll be honest and say that I did not choose for her to be called Photon in this comic. That’s all I have to say.”

Although not stated explicitly, this information suggests that Monica’s adoption of the Photon name in Ewing’s current comic book was mandated by individuals on “the MCU side.”

This is a clear indication that MCU Monica will use the Photon moniker, keeping with the MCU’s sporadic practice of collaborating with Marvel comics.

The MCU has used the name “Photon” before. In actuality, it was Monica’s mother Maria Rambeau’s callsign, just as Carol Danvers’s was “Avenger.” Taking up a name to honor her mother would make logical from a narrative perspective, given the anguish over her mother’s death that Monica had started suffering during WandaVision.

Phases 4 and 5 of the MCU appear to deal with legacy in large part, especially when it comes to legacy characters.

Younger and fresher actors are filling the roles left empty by the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s founding heroes, such as Sam Wilson in Captain America and the Winter Soldier and Kate Bishop in Hawkeye. Fans are aware of the tight relationship between Monica and Maria, thus Monica taking her mother’s name would be a touching addition to the legacy hero line.

Fans may now logically assume that Monica’s costume may coincide with her current Photon suit given the apparent similarity with Monica’s hero name. Of the three primary Marvel characters, Monica’s outfit is the only one that fans have not yet seen in its entirety; it has only appeared in part on merchandising. However, what is shown appears to fit the suit Monica is wearing in Ewing’s book.

The Monica Rambeau: Photon comic, the first two issues of which are currently available in comic book stores, and The Marvels, which will be released on July 28, both have more of Photon for fans to enjoy.
