Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ First-Month Sales Let Fans Down

Marvel’s Midnight Suns appear to have had a weak first month of sales after making its debut in early December.

The Marvel game for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC debuted on December 2 to mostly favorable reviews, with many applauding developer Firaxis for bringing its renowned tactical approach to the franchise of superhumans.

The release of Marvel’s most recent tactical role-playing game (RPG) was delayed for nearly a full year before it finally happened at the end of 2022.

The game was a sincere love letter to the entire Marvel Comics universe, not just the sometimes overlooked Midnight Suns heroic squad. Despite this, the game does not seem to be connecting with fans as well as one might anticipate.

Midnight Suns by Marvel is disappointing

Marvel’s Midnight Suns may have had a subpar first month, according to recent sales data.

The 2K Games-published superhero epic was the 14th most downloaded game on the PlayStation 5 (PS5) in the US and Canada in December, but it failed to place in the top 20 in the European charts.

Despite receiving excellent reviews (82% on Metacritic), Midnight Suns finished two spots behind Gotham Knights, a game that has been available for more than two months and now holds a score of 68%.

Marvel’s foray into tactical RPGs was always going to be niche, but the fact that it launched behind games like The Witcher 3 (which is more than seven years old) on the list should raise red flags.

Yes, The Witcher did release its next-generation patch in December, but one would imagine that any new Marvel game would surpass that.

Additionally, the game appeared below Crisis Core-Final Fantasy VII-Reunion, which peaked at position #10 on the North American PS5 sales charts. This was a recreation of a Final Fantasy VII PlayStation Portable (PSP) spin-off that was available for almost half as long as Midnight Suns.

Midnight Suns made its debut on December 2, enabling it almost an entire month to generate sales; Crisis Core debuted on December 13, over two weeks later, giving it less time to do so.

The following is the complete list for North America:

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
  2. FIFA 23
  3. NBA 2K23
  4. Grand Theft Auto V
  5. Madden NFL 23
  6. The Callisto Protocol
  7. God of War Ragnarök
  8. Need For Speed Unbound
  9. ELDEN RING
  10. Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion

This will be alarming information for the Firaxis Games developers and publisher, 2K. Even though they are likely aware of internal sales data and will know more precisely where the game is in relation to predictions and publisher expectations, fans will still be concerned.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a hit, at least according to critics. The game earned almost perfect reviews from critics who praised its blend of the powerful tale and tactical gameplay. But information like this could cause 2K and its parent firm Take-Two Interactive to reconsider their future ambitions.

Firaxis has stated that versions of the game for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch are forthcoming, so when those are released, there may be a slight increase in sales. The harm, though, seems to have already been done.

It’s never a good indication for a game to be heavily discounted this close to release, and despite the producers’ best efforts, a future Marvel’s Midnight Suns 2 may potentially be in jeopardy.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns are now accessible on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and the Series X/S consoles.
