The director has revealed the story behind Marvel Studios’ canceled Rocket & Groot movie.

Going into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, a Rocket & Groot movie was expected, according to director James Gunn.

Fans longed for Guardians of the Galaxy cast members to appear in independent films, particularly Rocket and Groot. Before production began, the two almost made a short film, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige deemed it “too much” and canceled it.

However, Gunn later admitted that he had always thought of Rocket Raccoon as the “ever-secret hero” of The Guardian films. It makes sense that Rocket’s story would finally be explored in the final film of Gunn’s trilogy.

But Gunn also mentioned that this trio could have been a spinoff movie in a recent interview.

Director James Gunn admitted in an interview with io9 that because Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 focuses so much on Rocket’s past that he considered making a Rocket and Groot spin-off instead.

Gunn stated that Rocket’s story should be saved for the third film because he “thought we should tell the Peter Quill story first.” When it came time for the third installment, Gunn wondered if it would be “a Rocket & Groot movie or Guardians 3:”

“I always assumed it was a third film because I assumed we had to tell the Peter Quill story first and then get into the Rocket story.” “I guess the only question was whether it was going to be a Rocket & Groot movie or a Guardians 3 movie because initially, I was going to do it as Rocket & Groot.”

Ultimately, Gunn decided to make his last appearance at Marvel Studios in another team-up movie with Rocket at the center.

Is it still possible for this film to be made?

Fans already know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn, and possibly Pom Klementieff’s last film in the franchise. Unfortunately, this leaves the fate of Rocket, Groot, and Nebula in doubt.

But Disney, a profit-focused entertainment company, is unlikely to stop making Guardians movies, so a new Guardians team will be formed. It’s just a matter of whether Rocket and Groot are still on that team.

It would be ridiculous for Disney to get rid of Groot, so he’s probably safe, but it’s still putting Rocket’s life in danger. Jan hinted at Rocket’s fate to a fan on Instagram, though it could be a hoax.

When Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opens on May 5, fans will find out what happens with Rocket and Groot.
