Hugh Jackman, who plays the Wolverine, is getting ready to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2024’s Deadpool 3, and he’ll do so with a feud already simmering when he teams up with Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson.
When Jackman and Reynolds announced in September 2022 that James Howlett would be returning for one final time under the Marvel Studios banner, the MCU community went wild. Before his tale is wrapped up in 2017’s Logan, this will remove him from the Fox X-Men chronology, enabling him to absorb a Multiverse’s worth of new storylines and plot threads as he and Deadpool join an universe with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Even though this is primarily a Deadpool movie, Jackman won’t have a minor role or a cameo to mark his MCU debut; instead, he’ll have a role that’s about on par with Ryan Reynolds’ as they both get to know the Marvel Studios plot.
And now, as audiences eagerly anticipate their second full-team outing since X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, Jackman has provided another statement about the bond that his and Reynolds’ characters will share this time.

Wolverine against The Merc with a Mouth in Deadpool 3
Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine in the upcoming film Deadpool 3, indicated a rivalry between his character and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool in an interview with People Magazine.
While teasing a new dynamic that he’ll get to experience as Wolverine, Jackman hinted that when he and Reynolds interact in the MCU, “classic comic-book enemies” will come to life together:
“There is a dynamic that I’ve never really had to execute as Wolverine before because I keep picturing Ryan and I as Deadpool and Wolverine, two traditional comic book foes. I simply believed, “This is going to be fun.” I’ve never done that before. I am impatient.”
Before Deadpool 3 was created, Jackman “honestly” believed that he was “done” playing the role of James Howlett, reiterating that he was “at peace with” leaving this character in the past:
“With it, I was at ease. Every day I would get the question “Can we do it again?” in interviews or from Ryan Reynolds, and I would respond, “No, I’m done.””
He anticipates himself and Reynolds exchanging blows on camera frequently during filming this movie, saying he’ll “probably have more fun on this movie” than anything he’s ever done:
“Being on set with [Ryan] every day and seeing those two in every city together every day, I believe… They’ll probably be punching each other to death the entire time, in my opinion. I’ll probably have more fun making this movie than any other I’ve ever done, jokes and all.”
In late December 2022, Jackman discussed the friendship between Wolverine and Deadpool, stating that the clawed mutant will undoubtedly want to “hit (Deadpool) in the head” on a regular basis in the story:
“We are ten being incredibly near and zero being reality. We have 0. We are incompatible. hate one another. I’m only speaking from my perspective, so let’s discuss that. Wolverine finds Deadpool annoying. irritated with him. Wants to hit him in the skull or be a million miles away from him. Therefore, I’ll probably hit him in the head repeatedly.
Jackman described the characters as “kind of opposites,” pointing out how drastically different Deadpool and Wolverine are from one another. This creates a crazy dynamic when they work together:
They resemble opposites in a way. He’s the quick-witted, fast-talking loudmouth, and my character simply wants to punch him in the head, so my vinegar to his
Wolverine and Deadpool Face Off in the MCU
While Wolverine and Deadpool will undoubtedly need to work together to defeat whatever formidable foe arises in Deadpool 3, their main conflict initially seems to be with one another. Since Logan wants to keep doing his own thing and will set them up against one another from the start, Wade Wilson will probably be eager to join the world of the heroes he has mocked for years.
After two seasons of Loki, the Time Variance Authority is apparently making a triumphant return, and dealing with them will undoubtedly create yet another layer of irritation for both of their main characters. And while viewers are undoubtedly anticipating that friction, there will be some difficult patches in their relationship before they are able to come to an understanding and learn how to collaborate for the common good.
Details about that rivalry won’t be revealed until Reynolds and Jackman are working on this thrilling threequel together, which won’t be released for over two years. But as this adventure kicks off the MCU’s mutant storyline, tensions will be high for all parties involved as time travel antics and the entire Multiverse are also pulled into the equation.
