Following rumors that at least one hero would perish, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn hinted at the significant deaths that the film would contain.
Guardians 3 is generating a lot of fan excitement, especially in the wake of its powerful debut trailer, which hinted at future loss and trauma. This is in line with rumors that the MCU threequel will feature at least one significant Guardians death, with the film serving as the heroes’ last stand.
Gunn even addressed a fan theory about the deaths in Vol. 3 by admitting that it was at least partially accurate. However, the director has kept quiet about the surprises in his film as he starts to set the direction for DC’s future in his new position as CEO of DC Studios.
With only six months until release, the superhero genre legend provided his most recent cryptic hint pointing toward the impending losses.

James Gunn Teases Deaths in Guardians 3
Director James Gunn shared the Guardians 3 posters on Instagram after the film’s trailer debuted, calling it the “end of an era.” One fan responded by pointing out that even after Vol. 3: The Last Stand, the MCU will probably continue to release projects that feature the Guardians.
“Not really the end of an era,” says mrsi6733, “as Marvel will keep making Guardians movies and using the characters in movies like Thor: Love and Thunder.”
Gunn’s response to the message, “not all of them,” appears to imply that not all of the Guardians will live to see the 2023 blockbuster and subsequent MCU appearances.
Which Guardians Will Pass Away in Volume 3?
James Gunn has been upfront about Vol. 3 being the conclusion of his Guardians saga, and now that he is switching to DC, that assertion is more resounding than ever. This does not preclude Marvel Studios from wanting to use these characters in the future, perhaps in the upcoming Avengers films.
Gunn, however, appears determined to carry on the tradition of including a significant death in each Guardians movie, following the passing of Yondu and the original Groot in Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, respectively. Who will, however, be the most recent heroic death to move viewers’ hearts next summer?
Numerous rumors have circulated that Rocket could be one of the victims, possibly as a sacrifice to stop his evil creator, the High Evolutionary. It makes sense that Rocket’s demise would fit in perfectly given that his origins were finally explored, that he had a romantic arc, and that he was up against a villain who had connections to him.
Additionally, there has been a lot of speculation about Drax dying, particularly after Dave Bautista insisted that this would be the last appearance of his MCU character. The actor may be among those most likely to pass away after finally receiving attention in the Disney+ Holiday Special due to how definite he was in his statement.
But while we’re on the subject, it’s also important to note which Guardians are still alive, and Gamora tops the list after having already experienced one fatality in Avengers: Infinity War. Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord is one of the favorites to continue his MCU adventures after Vol. 3, which might spare him from the High Evolutionary’s wrath.
However, Gunn’s use of the phrase “not all of them” in reference to their return would seem to imply that at least some will. Therefore, even though Vol. 3 will largely mark the conclusion of this Guardians story and likely their standalone franchise, at least some of the cast members may appear in upcoming MCU films.
