James Gunn Explains Why Tom Cruise Wasn’t Cast as a Character in Guardians 3

Director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 James Gunn explained why he chose Will Poulter to play Adam Warlock in the MCU rather than someone like Tom Cruise.

It’s taken a while to get around to introducing Adam Warlock. In actuality, the huge moment was set up at the conclusion of 2017’s Vol. 2, and it won’t actually happen until six years later.

Will Poulter, who starred in the movie Midsommar, was announced to play the enduring figure back in 2021. However, he wasn’t the first option many fans proposed; many believed Tom Cruise would make the ideal choice.

Director James Gunn responded to the Adam Warlock casting proposals by saying that “it would be bizarre for Ayesha to design the perfect guy as someone in his mid-fifties.”

In a recent interview about the upcoming blockbuster, the director went into more detail about the reasons behind the casting choices he selected.

The director of the newly released Holiday Special and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 spoke about the choice to cast Will Poulter as Adam Warlock in an interview with Empire Online.

First, the director made it clear that Warlock’s function in the narrative is “more sophisticated” than simply opposing the protagonists of the picture:

It’s a little bit more complex than that… But it’s clear that he’s not a good man. What we are witnessing is a young Warlock who has just emerged from his cocoon and is still learning how to navigate the world. He practically is a baby.

Gunn stated that he “wanted the individual who had dramatic chops and comedy chops:” when asked why he didn’t choose to recruit an actor like Tom Cruise.

“Online users suggested that Tom Cruise should play Adam Warlock… Not only for this film but also for future projects that Marvel may employ Adam Warlock for, I needed someone who was young and had the dramatic and comedy abilities… He might develop into a genuinely significant figure.

It’s generally preferable to trust what the filmmakers and Marvel Studios determine is best when it comes to casting.

While fans will have to wait a few months to see how Poulter fares in the part, the actor is eager to be in it. He previously stated that he is a “big fan of the tone and ingenuity of James Gunn’s work” and that the entire experience is “very, very cool for [him].”

So, how precisely will this immature Warlock appear? Knowing Gunn’s comedic nature, Poulter’s portrayal will most likely be quite literal. That means the character may be far more immature than people imagine.

However, having a man-baby play the legendary figure will be an intriguing choice.

Anyone who is concerned should know that the character will go on to perform significant things in the MCU. So, if this “baby” isn’t what you expected, Warlock will most likely grow into a more complicated, comic-accurate character over time.

For those hoping to see Tom Cruise in the MCU, there’s always the chance he’ll join the cast as the Tony Stark Variant everyone wants to see. Perhaps in Avengers: Secret Wars?
