James Cameron’s Cancelled Spider-Man Movie Art Surfaces Online

While James Cameron’s work on Avatar: The Way of Water is currently grabbing attention, fans can also see what he had in mind for Marvel’s Spider-Man.

While Marvel and DC continue to soar to new heights, Cameron has largely stayed out of the superhero game despite his legendary success in blockbuster movie franchises. In contrast, the writer/director had at one point in the middle of the 1990s written a script for an R-rated Spider-Man movie and was considering casting future Oscar winner Leonardo Dicaprio as Peter Parker and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Doctor Octopus.

After experiencing the iconic spider bite, this Spider-Man film would have offered a darker glimpse into Peter’s origin story while balancing his high school life and superhero duties, as every Peter, Parker interpretation must do.

A few pieces of concept art showing Cameron’s ideas for Marvel’s web-slinger from thirty years ago have recently started to circulate online as he celebrates another billion-dollar box office success with Avatar 2.

James Cameron’s interpretation of Spider-Man from a canceled solo film in the 1990s is featured in two new pieces of concept art that have been making the rounds online thanks to SlashFilm’s Chris Evangelista.

The drawings, which Cameron himself created, are from his book “Tech Noir: The Art of James Cameron,” which will be published in 2021.

The white eyes of the Spider-Man mask stand out despite the difficulty in seeing the finer details because they closely resemble the character’s appearance in the comics. As he scales the side of a New York City building, some of the webbing from his suit can be seen running down his left arm and a sliver of blue can be seen on his leg.

The dark blue coloration of the same image makes Spidey’s mask’s eyes stand out even more against his darker suit. Uncertainty surrounds whether Peter would have worn the black suit seen in the comics and other films or whether this is simply an altered version of the original photograph.

The idea of seeing a Spider-Man movie under Cameron’s direction has many wondering what might have been, even though these two images only provide a small glimpse of what Cameron would have done with Marvel’s web-slinger. A darker interpretation of Marvel’s most well-known hero would undoubtedly have piqued fans’ interest, especially given the director’s success on other iconic ’90s blockbusters like Terminator 2 and Titanic.

The superhero genre wasn’t what it is today at the time, and Wesley Snipes’ Blade hadn’t yet made its debut and established a new benchmark for comic book movies. The idea of a Spider-Man movie, though, is intriguing if Cameron could have made the web-swinging and wall-crawling come to life on the big screen. Cameron has always been one to push the boundaries of what movies can do visually.

Now that three different Spider-Man films have been released in the twenty-first century, fans can only speculate about what Cameron might have done with this more serious Spider-Man outing by looking back at bits and pieces like this. It is unknown whether he will ever direct a superhero movie, but given his box office success, he will undoubtedly be in discussions with the Marvel side of things.
