Actor Charlie Cox discussed the idea that Matt Murdock could be from the Multiverse of the MCU as the character makes a comeback to the world of a solo television series.
Charlie Cox will return to the role of Matt Murdock in Marvel’s upcoming 2024 series Daredevil: Born Again for yet another adventure.
Naturally, Matt has already established himself in the MCU over the past year or so with appearances in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Spider-Man: No Way Home. He will also appear as a guest star in the upcoming series Echo from Marvel Studios.
Not to mention that Cox previously starred in three seasons of the Netflix series Daredevil, the validity of which has been hotly contested by the show’s fans. Charlie Cox himself has now suggested that the canon controversy may involve a Multiversal factor.

The Multiversal Daredevil Possibilities by Charlie Cox
The question of whether Matt Murdock who appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk is the same as the Netflix version, or if he’s a different Multiversal version, was posed to Charlie Cox, the star of Daredevil: Born Again, during an interview with UK-based publication I News:
“I don’t think the character is different. Simply put, I believe it to be a different time in his life. They hired the same actor, so I don’t think my interpretation will alter. Are we claiming a new era or a different phase?
Ignoring Cox’s use of the word “variant,” the actor went on to say that he has not yet read any scripts for Born Again, which might mean he is not entirely aware of the canon status of his character:
“I don’t know; I haven’t read the scripts. However, isn’t it a component of the Multiverse?
Additionally, Cox mentioned the significantly lighter portrayal of Murdock in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. The actor reassured fans that he still plans to play his character’s core in the same way as he did on the Netflix series:
“The only time I’ll change is if the show’s tone is drastically different.”
Finally, he made a reference to the subtitle of the show, “Born Again,” which is also the name of a significant comic book arc in which Daredevil attempts to forge a new identity for himself. Cox warned viewers against assuming that just because two things have the same name, they will follow the same plot lines.
Nobody should infer from the name the kinds of stories we will tell, in my opinion.
A different Matt Murdock?
Charlie Cox’s use of the word “variant” to describe Daredevil’s persona in Born Again is particularly intriguing.
Fans of the MCU will undoubtedly be familiar with the term “Variants,” which the franchise uses to refer to Multiversal versions of its characters. Cox might not have read a single episode’s script, but he has undoubtedly had conversations with Kevin Feige and the show’s producers about where Daredevil fits into the MCU’s canon.
So, if Cox is suggesting that Daredevil: Born Again might center on a Matt from the Multiverse, it’s possible that he’s been playing a Variant of the character in his past and present Marvel Studios appearances. Naturally, that would run counter to his assertions that he has been portraying the Netflix version.
It’s still very difficult to know for sure whether Daredevil from the MCU and the Netflix series are the same character. Both sides could have valid arguments made for them.
When Daredevil: Born Again debuts on Disney+ in early 2024, hopefully, this argument will be finally put to rest.
