Iron Man 2″ could be a polished, high-octane sequel, not nearly as good because the original however builds all over again on an unusual performance by Robert Downey Jr. The superhero genre isn’t necessarily great, but when it’s out there (as in “Iron Man” and “The Dark Knight”), it raises the bar. Downey here gives us a Tony Stark who is more cocky and cocky than ever. Or, and here’s the key, it appears.

All heroes have fatal flaws. This is one of the rules of the road in fiction. It’s Tony Stark’s fault that he dies. The act of great sin comes naturally but is now useful in disguise. His chest battery, or life source, whatever it is, is spilling and poisoning his blood. It works by using the rarest element in the periodic table, and renewing it would require finding or inventing a new element. It’s not easy.

Hammer hires Vanko to design a better suit than Stark, the two suit designs go to war, we get half an hour of impressive special effects, and Bob’s your uncle. But he also has a niece, a charming art expert played by Scarlett Johansson, who may have more than meets the eye. In the comic books, the character was named Black Widow, which was never a good sign. Fighting on Stark’s side is his fellow Lt. Col. “Roddy” Rhodes (Don Cheadle); Navigating through a heated storm of enemy missiles, the two found time to talk. How slow will the arrow be going if your friend has time to warn you to block it?

The best CGI sequence in the film is interrupted when Tony Stark decides to drive his car to the Monaco Grand Prix, and Ivan Vanko stands fearlessly in the middle of the race, dressed as a strange gladiator and lightning. Can cut the whip. The car is two. He nearly destroys Stark, which is so exciting that we forget to wonder how he knew Tony was driving his car. Hammer signed him after this race.

Mickey Rourke gives us all Ivan Vanko we could have ever wanted, except he has a third hand to make room for more tattoos. His performances include his gold teeth, a heartless laugh, and lots of grunting. Sam Rockwell gives an aggressively comedic performance as Hammer, a whiner who seems in over his head in the big arms business.
