According to Jonathan Majors, he was inspired to play Kang the Conquerer in the MCU by other Marvel actors including Robert Downey Jr.
The actor made his debut in a Marvel production in 2021’s Loki finale, as the enigmatic He Who Remains. The next time we see Majors will be in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, when he will make his acting debut as the notorious Kang the Conquerer, the MCU’s newest significant threat.
It can be challenging to agree to a multi-project arc in the MCU, especially when many Marvel actors are unsure of the big-picture goals for their characters.
However, it seems as though the Majors had no reservations about adopting the position of Kang as a significant part of his destiny.

What Motivated Jonathan Majors to Play Kang?
Jonathan Majors compared the MCU to the “greatest drama school in the world for adults” in an interview with Deadline:
“When I was 21 years old, I looked online to find the top drama program for adults. After researching Yale alumni and the work they were undertaking—no pun intended—I ultimately decided to enroll there. I looked at the same ledger when I had the chance to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Majors referred to Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, as “the Dean” and named Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo as outstanding graduates:
“The Dean, the James Bundy of Yale, is Kevin Feige. The students, instructors, and staff all serve as directors, right? Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Tilda Swinton, Robert Downey Jr. countless others. Who wouldn’t want to perform with the group?”
Despite not being aware of Marvel’s plans for Kang, the actor claimed to be certain that he would “get an opportunity to work with fantastic actors”:
“At first, I had no idea that Kang would act in the manner he does in Quantumania. But I was aware that I would get the chance to collaborate with excellent actors.”
Majors added that Marvel was interested in him because of his performance in The Last Black Man in San Francisco:
I was in San Francisco four years ago for The Last Black Man, one of the topics we spoke before regarding Magazine Dreams serving as a legitimizing role. Even though I only had a limited body of work, the MCU called my agent and tried to get to know me because of it.
The MCU Acting School
Actors who haven’t appeared in the MCU are becoming harder to come by these days. While several of the original cast members, such as Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., have already left their Marvel roles, new celebrities are joining Marvel projects on a daily basis. Therefore, it is not unexpected that Majors was drawn to the MCU because of the vast array of brilliant performers that the MCU has to offer.
Majors has already claimed that appearing in a superhero movie had no drawbacks, so he obviously has no regrets about choosing to play Kang the Conquerer.
That’s advantageous given that Kang’s involvement in the MCU is only now beginning. Majors will probably have an even bigger role in the upcoming Avengers film, which is dubbed The Kang Dynasty after his terrifying Marvel adversary, after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
