Has Black Panther 2 performed poorly? New Profit Amounts Disclosed

If Black Panther 2 underperformed for Marvel Studios, new data indicated.

Fans eagerly anticipated the MCU’s return to Wakanda in 2022 as they wondered how director Ryan Coogler and the film’s stellar cast would deal with the loss of Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman.

The movie broke the record for the greatest box office take ever for a female-led superhero movie in the United States and ended up being one of the biggest movies of the year.

But does Marvel Studios believe it to be a success?

Deadline just published a report that detailed the final revenue for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

At the box office, the Wakandan epic did well, bringing in $454 million domestically and $389 million abroad. With Disney earning little over half of that, or $450 million, the movie had a final global gross of $859 million USD.

The movie is currently running about $500 million behind Black Panther’s $1.382 billion global gross from 2018.

In addition, Black Panther 2 made $155 million from home entertainment sales and an extra $170 million from TV and streaming.

All of this adds to total revenue of $750 million for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but did it make money?

Black Panther 2’s production, promotion, and distribution expenditures totaled $491 million after accounting for production costs ($200 million), print and advertising ($140 million), video charges ($55 million), residuals ($30 million), interest and overhead ($36 million), and participation ($30 million).

In other words, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ended up making an estimated $259 million in profit after everything was said and done.

This is considerably less than the record-breaking $476.8 million profit earned by the first Black Panther movie. One must keep in mind, though, that Wakanda Forever debuted in a theater setting while still recuperating from the COVID-19 virus that ravaged the world for years.

The film’s notable lack of a Mandarin release is another factor in this situation. Only recently did Wakanda Forever begin showing in the Chinese market, which contributed $105 million to Black Panther’s initial global box office total.

Wakanda Forever performed significantly better than 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, more than double that film’s $103 million gross.

Was Black Panther: Wakanda Forever a success for Disney and Marvel Studios with all this information? Clearly, the answer is “yes.”

The Wakanda sequel by Ryan Coogler was an admirable effort that made a sizable profit.

Even though Wakanda Forever may not have performed as well as its predecessor, Black Panther, it still has high standards to meet considering the circumstances surrounding its production and release.

One must keep in mind that the first Black Panther movie was a cultural sensation as Marvel Studios raised interest in the (at the time) upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. The 2018 movie is currently the 15th highest box office success of all time, and while its sequel had a chance to overtake it, given the state of the movie industry, it was never starting from a disadvantage.
