James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the fourth MCU film, offered a melancholic update centered on the titular team of heroes.
Despite decisively defeating the tall evolutionist, Vol. 3 concluded by showing how most of the original team members made the decision to retire. However, the film’s post-credits sequence shows that a new team of Guardians of the Galaxy has been formed, led by Rocket Raccoon.
Many assumed that Guardians of the Galaxy 4 would come after the credits.
Guardians of the Galaxy 4: Will it happen?
James Gunn reinforced his decision not to return for a fourth film centered on the titular team when he responded to a fan on social media site Threads:
A: “‘Guardians 3′ is the best Marvel movie to date… make it a 4!!! Please!!!”
Gunn: “Sorry, but I think I’ll call all three.”
Gunn, when asked about a hypothetical Marvel return in November 2022, told Entertainment Tonight, “Never say never,” which is interesting:
“At least for now. Never say never, I suppose. Future? For now though, yes.
A fan on X (formerly known as Twitter) questioned Gunn in May 2023 about the authenticity of a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy film.
If that happens, the filmmaker responded, “It won’t be called Volume 4.”
Additionally, Gunn reaffirmed in an interview with Esquire Middle East in May 2023 that he believes there may be a fourth installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, but it won’t be called Vol. 4: Awakening.
“I don’t think ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 4′ will ever come out,” there are plenty of reasons the gang won’t be back. The ‘Guardians‘ franchise can continue, but not with this cast.
The Marvel head later said that he would welcome a fourth film “until a new director comes on board”:
“I think it’s going to be great as long as somebody pulls themselves together and doesn’t try to repeat that style. And I’d love to do it with a lot of different filmmakers. I’m sure that will happen.”

Why Guardians of the Galaxy 4 needs a new director?
James Gunn’s most recent comment makes it clear that he’s satisfied with how his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy ended.
This is further proven by the fact that both fans and critics have highly praised the third MCU installment.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Although Gunn left to join as the new CEO of DC Studios, the eponymous team’s journey proved far from complete.
Thanks to the return of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord to Earth and Rocket’s new crew of Guardians, the franchise still has plenty of storyline potential for potential Guardians of the Galaxy 4.
Additionally, hiring a new filmmaker to helm the Guardians series is a smart move by Marvel Studios, as it has the potential to bring a fresh perspective to the motley crew of heroes.
Gunn said that he would support a fourth film in the future.
On Disney+, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently streaming.
