Doctor Strange 2016 superhero movie is based on the same-named Marvel Comics character. It is the 14th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is made and released by Marvel Studios (MCU). John Spites and C. Directed by Scott Derrickson from a screenplay co-written with Robert Cargill.
Various incarnations of the Doctor Strange film adaptation were developed from the mid-1980s until Paramount Pictures purchased the film rights from Marvel Studios in April 2005. In June 2014, Derrickson was hired to direct, with Spites rewriting the script. Cumberbatch was cast in the title role in December 2014, necessitating a change in schedule to meet his other commitments. This gave Derrickson time to prepare the script, which he brought to Kargil. Principal photography of the film began in Nepal in November 2015 before moving to the UK and Hong Kong and wrapped in New York City in April 2016.

Unique in appearance with a classic cast and highly cohesive cast, this latest film from the Marvel stable is The Rarest of Beasts, a comic-book movie that fully justifies its reliance on CGI effects. This legendary hero-turned-origin story points to the spatial origins of Christopher Nolan’s opening and the baroque charm of the Harry Potter series. It’s also the most psychedelic cinema, at times mind-melting, as Peter Fonda completely outdid himself in The Trip.
But essentially, Doctor Strange is its own entity: a beautiful, endlessly engaging puzzle of Escher-like complexity. Director Scott Derrickson, who co-wrote the film, talks effortlessly to transition from standard horror movies to this bold spiritual popcorn flick. The screenplay has a sharp wit that gives the audience enough wit to capture the punchline of a comedy set a full hour ago. But Derrickson’s greatest achievement isn’t to look like a stoner’s inspiring bedroom poster, but to incorporate astral planes, third eyes, and multiple realms—the story has many cosmic fools.
Much of the success of the film lies in the cast. As Dr. Stephen Strange, the brilliant neurosurgeon whose life is shattered by a horrific car accident, Benedict Cumberbatch is as steely and sharp as he uses surgical instruments to examine the damaged brains of his patients. When we meet him, he has the privileged swagger of Tony Stark (Iron Man), but no warmth. But Cumberbatch makes Marvel heroes more unexpected and intriguing. Strange’s desperation at his ruined hands leads him to Nepal and a secret realm led by an ancient master.

Swindon generally excels in the magical arts as a mentor to Strange. A supernatural Zen teacher with a touch of very earthly cruelty, her screen presence has an authority that gives weight to Strange’s spiritual journey. The strong endorsement of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Morto and Benedict Wong as Wong brings heart and humor to the story. Meanwhile, Danish actor Matt Mikkelsen is used as a treacherous former disciple, Caecilius. With her purple eyeshadow and a backup team of enthusiasts, she is the frontman of a glam-rock cover band. Unsurprisingly, one of the strongest characters turns out to be an item of clothing. Doctor Strange’s trademark costume has great comic timing and scene-stealing flair.
As we dive into the mind-bending layers of trippy visuals, the solidity of the performance is an essential anchor. This is an example of why an audience watching in 2D will remember a lot more than in 3D. Not only do the fantasy elements pop out of the screen, but so does the sheer chaos of Nepal.
Some end-credits stings give us a hint of things to come at our next meeting with the Doctor, and Marvel fully appreciates the refreshing change of new blood this movie has to offer.
