Disney declares the official lifting of China’s ban on the Marvel movie.

With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, a Marvel Studios production will finally be released in Chinese theaters for the first time since 2019.

Every subsequent Marvel movie has not been released in Chinese theaters since it was confirmed that Black Widow wouldn’t make her cinematic debut there.

Either China’s restrictions on all foreign film releases, which emphasize the country’s own local film industry, or remarks made by the franchise’s actors or directors, such as Chloé Zhao, were to blame.

Because of this, many fans believed the worst and that no Marvel movie will ever again be shown in China. Unexpectedly, both Black Panther and Ant-Man and The Wasp sequels will be released in Chinese theaters this February.

The return of former Disney CEO Bob Iger, who previously had good relations with China, is the most obvious assumption at the change of heart from China. It’s likely that Bob Chapek had in some way turned them off to the point that they needed to be replaced.

It’s unlikely that this would be another preemptive error by Disney with only one month till a probable release in China. For instance, Black Widow’s Chinese marketing hinted at a release that never happened.

After more than three years, Chinese fans will hopefully see a Marvel movie in theaters once more.

It will also benefit Disney’s box office because a number of movies, like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, were unable to surpass $1 billion due to the prohibition in the country with the world’s largest box office.

Again, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will be released in Chinese theaters on February 7 and February 17, respectively.
