Diego Luna Responds to Fantastic Four Casting Rumors

Diego Luna, the actor who plays Reed Richards in the Fantastic Four, has addressed the possibility of joining the MCU.

Diego Luna, who first appeared in the Star Wars universe as Cassian Andor in 2016’s Rogue One, recently reprised his Rebel hero in Disney+’s Andor. The prequel adventure was an instant hit with critics and fans, quickly becoming regarded as some of the franchise’s best content.

Part of the praise was due to Luna’s outstanding performance, which earned Star Wars its second-ever Golden Globe acting nomination. This has sparked a lot of speculation about what the actor might do next, and as has been the case with most talent recently, the MCU has come up.

Scooper CanWeGetSomeToast previously hinted that Luna could be one of the actors being considered to play Reed Richards in the Fantastic Four. While the actor is currently filming Andor Season 2 (which will continue until August 2023), he has addressed the possibility of him joining the MCU.

In an interview with Kristian Harloff, Andor star Diego Luna was asked if he would be interested in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe if the opportunity arose.

Luna briefly addressed recent rumours that he could be in line to lead the Fantastic Four, calling the number of claims that he becomes involved in “incredible”:

“I really like… I was talking about it this morning, along with the rumours. You know, when you become a part of rumours, half of the rumours are true. The amount of stuff I’m seeing now is simply incredible.”

The Andor actor Diego Luna went on to say that he will be “busy” for the next two years before deciding what to do next:

“I can only tell you that I’ll be very busy for the next two years. We’ll see in two years if what I want to do is even filmable.”

Following the success of Andor and the praise that Diego Luna received for his performance in the series, the actor will undoubtedly be on Disney’s radar for other major roles. This could put him in line for a role in the MCU, possibly as important as the lead in Fantastic Four.

Many will undoubtedly see Luna easily playing the stretchy hero, despite the significant departure from the comics and previous iterations that casting a Latin actor would represent. The actor’s comments don’t necessarily put an end to rumours that he’s in talks to join the MCU, but they do raise some questions.

Luna is currently filming Andor Season 2 and will be until August, and he appears to have commitments after that. If he’s already committed for the next two years, he’ll be out of the running for Fantastic Four, which is expected to shoot in late 2023 or early 2024 in time for its February 2025 release.

However, with the actor stating that “what [he] wants to do is even film” after those two years of commitments, any major MCU role like Reed Richards may be off the table. After all, a character like Mr Fantastic will necessitate a long-term commitment for many years.

That doesn’t rule out the possibility of Luna taking on another MCU role, perhaps one with fewer long-term and time commitments. The actor has previously expressed a dislike for longer projects of this nature, as he was the driving force behind Tony Gilroy’s decision to reduce Andor from five seasons to two.

Nonetheless, his comments do not rule out the Marvel universe for Luna, and it would not be surprising if his name was mentioned for some characters. Every actor has a place in the MCU, whether it’s as a one-off villain, side character, or even a hero.
