First Look at the Doctor Strange 2 Supervillain That Was Cut

The Sorcerer Supreme and the Marvel bad guy Nightmare were to square off in the sequel, according to new Doctor Strange 2 concept art.

It’s no secret that the MCU film underwent a number of changes before becoming Doctor Strange 2. The movie was initially under the direction of Scott Derrickson, the director of Doctor Strange, who had declared his intention to turn it into a horror movie.

The sequel to Nightmare had also caught the attention of writer C. Robert Cargill, who was working at the time with Derrickson. However, many of these aspects were altered after the original creative team quit the project citing creative differences, and were replaced by director Sam Raimi and writer Michael Waldron.

Although the date Nightmare was removed from the Doctor Strange 2 story is unknown, recently made concept art shows that the character was at one point a crucial component of the plot.

In the upcoming film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, a mysterious antagonist will square off against Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange.

It appears that Nightmare from the Marvel comics is being portrayed once more. In earlier Doctor Strange 2 concept art, the character can be seen wearing samurai armor.

In what appears to be an alternate dimension, the artwork depicts a fight between Doctor Strange and Nightmare. This might even be a rendering of the Nightmare World.

Additional pictures appear to show Nightmare defeating Doctor Strange in the fight, as the Sorcerer Supreme can be seen looking terrified as he is sent plummeting down an endless staircase.

How did Nightmare fare in the MCU?

It appears that Nightmare was once intended to be the main antagonist of Doctor Strange 2 based on the battle depicted in this concept art. The idea that America Chavez once had a significant role to play is supported by additional abandoned concept art that depicts her in the hands of a Nightmare-style villain.

This concept art was probably ordered early in the production process when Scott Derrickson was still set to serve as a director. It appears that Nightmare’s involvement was reduced when Raimi and Waldron took over the creative duties so that Wanda Maximoff could take the role of the antagonist.

Of course, this doesn’t rule out the possibility of Nightmare appearing in the MCU in the future. In Doctor Strange 3, Benedict Cumberbatch’s character and Clea will embark on a new adventure. The two will undoubtedly need to face off against another magical foe, and Nightmare most certainly fits the bill.
