Dave Bautista Defends His Decision to Leave Marvel

Following his upcoming Marvel appearance, MCU star Dave Bautista elaborated on why he believes his departure from his role as Drax is so ideal.

The current edition of the Guardians team, which has been a mainstay in the MCU since 2014, will conclude with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is confirmed to be their final narrative. And while it’s widely anticipated that at least one team member will die in this film, Dave Bautista has talked about it the most, with many people thinking Guardians 3 will be Drax’s last outing.

In numerous social media posts and interviews, Bautista has hinted that this movie will most probably be his last performance in part.

And now that Drax and company are about to give the MCU its second film of Phase 5, Bautista has opened up about Guardians 3 being his final film with Marvel Studios.

Veteran MCU actor Dave Bautista spoke on his choice to leave the series following his appearance in this spring’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Having noted that he and his co-stars all agreed to a trilogy, Bautista once more stated that this will be his final Marvel Cinematic Universe film. He also stated that this would be “the last version of [their] Guardians of the Galaxy” in the MCU:

“I agree that it’s strange, but I’m not sure why it’s making headlines. It seems like our trilogy, which is kind of what we all agreed to do since this is my seventh movie as Drax and my third “Guardians” movie. The Guardians of the Galaxy will no longer exist after this.”

In response to Fallon’s question on whether it was “hard to walk away” from the part, Bautista acknowledged that it was difficult but also that the moment was perfect. Making it clear that he doesn’t want to compromise his tale in any way, he wants to end his time in the MCU similarly to how he ended his career as a professional wrestler:

“Even if it’s difficult, now is the ideal time to leave. We all have those ideal character arcs and such a fairy tale conclusion. I frequently compare it to how I concluded my professional wrestling career because I didn’t want to taint that ending, and it’s the same with Drax. I only need to finish it off perfectly, and I won’t take another job as Drax just to get paid. I wouldn’t want to tarnish that.”

The likelihood that Drax the Destroyer will die in some way during the movie is extremely strong because Dave Bautista hasn’t been shy about declaring that Guardians 3 will be the last time fans see him in the MCU. It hasn’t been a secret over the past few years that this film will have a sense of closure, and in this latest interview, actor Dave Bautista made it clear that he wants to end his involvement with the MCU on a successful note.

While the movie’s first teaser, which emerged in early December, hinted at impending disaster for the group, which is still grieving from the events of Avengers: Endgame, precise plot details are still being kept under wraps.

When the trailer ended, Drax was deep in conversation with Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord about killing anyone who stood in their path. This implied that Drax’s journey was drawing to a close. Even if this comment alone does not guarantee Drax’s survival, things aren’t looking good for the Guardians’ metaphor-averse member.
