While Captain Marvel 2 has yet to be released, filmmaker Nia DaCosta is already talking about the possibility of a Captain Marvel 3.
Marvel Studios’ upcoming blockbuster The Marvels will tie in the stories of Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel Kamala Khan, as well as Captain Marvel.
Three unlikely allies are forced to cooperate in the film to stop Javeh Ashton’s Kree revolutionaries from destroying the universe. Due to Marvel’s Phase 5 slot, the film will also serve as a precursor to the team’s upcoming exploits in Avengers 5 and beyond.
Does Captain Marvel 3 Exist?
In the most recent issue of Total Film Magazine, Nia DaCosta discussed the possibility of Captain Marvel’s adventures outside of The Marvels.
The filmmaker said he faced conflicting responses after pitching potential ideas to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, with some believing he had “a movie in the works” while others “believed there was another project that he wasn’t a part of:”
“I’m going to give Kevin 17 different scenarios of what could happen to all these girls, including why, how, and this, and that. And when he says, `ʻOkay, girl,” I feel like I’m right. The movie is in my hands. Sometimes I’m like, “Oh, they’ve got this whole plan that I’m not a part of,” and other times I’m not.
As a trio in the MCU, Monica Rambeau, Kamala Khan, and Captain Marvel should continue to appear, “because they’re great together,” DaCosta said.
The success of Marvel at the box office will undoubtedly have an impact on Captain Marvel 3.
The success of female-led movies in 2023 “really depends on how good the movie is,” DaCosta said.
“I think it really comes down to whether or not the movie is good for female-led movies, and specifically the interest in female superheroes. In particular, there’s a proliferation of superhero or action movies with female characters.”
According to DaCosta, the success of a project like Barbie in 2023 depends on a number of “specific” factors. For superhero movies like The Marvel, the quality of the film “will keep audiences coming back,” he said.
“Barbie is a very different Barbie. Every woman in the world has owned a Barbie, along with many men. So I predict these events will generate at least $1 billion in revenue.”
But if the quality of female-led superhero movies doesn’t go down, I think that will keep audiences coming back.

How far can Captain Marvel fly?
Due to the box office success of Captain Marvel in 2019, a sequel seemed certain. Disney is in the business of cutting back on the number of products it produces right now, so The Marvels will have to be similarly successful if Captain Marvel 3 is to be guaranteed.
Regardless, Dacosta seems eager and ready to kick off a sequel to The Marvels, and plenty of stories have been collected from the comics featuring the three heroines.
Another concern is how these characters fit into Kevin Feige’s grand scheme for the MCU. After the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, there’s no telling how The Marvels will affect the MCU, even if it’s confirmed.
However, Marvel includes some of the MCU’s most popular heroes. With over a billion dollars in revenue, Captain Marvel has proven her credibility as a character, and Ms. Marvel is one more.
The Marvel cast is getting even more attention and it looks like they could have a bright future in the MCU.
