As it turns out, Kathryn Newton, a newcomer to Marvel Studios, may have influenced Bill Murray‘s decision to join the MCU in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.
Murray will make his first appearance in the franchise as Lord Krylar, the “governor of Axia,” in the upcoming threequel.
However, he is not the only MCU newcomer in the film. Kathryn Newton will also make her Marvel Studios debut, replacing Emma Fuhrmann as Cassie Lang in Avengers: Endgame.
Both Newton and Murray knew each other prior to joining Ant-Man 3, having golfed together on numerous occasions – golfing is even a hobby Murray takes quite seriously many years after his performance in the 1980 golf-centric comedy Caddyshack. Murray’s interest in the franchise may have stemmed from their friendship on the golf course.

How did Bill Murray get involved with the MCU?
According to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania actress Kathryn Newton is responsible for Bill Murray’s inclusion in the MCU threequel.
The Cassie Lang actress told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that Murray called her and said “[he wanted] to join the Marvel Universe,” actually asking her “if it was okay if [he were to join] Ant-Man:”
“‘Kathryn, I have Bill Murray for you,’ my mother says a few months later. What? I’m like, what? What about Bill Murray? ‘Yeah, um, here,’ she says. ‘Kathryn, I’ve been thinking, I think I want to join the Marvel Universe, and I was just going to ask you if it was okay if I joined ‘Ant-Man,” he says.”
“Yeah, Bill, that’s fine with me,” Newton replied, but “maybe there’s someone else to talk to.”
She assumed Murray had already accepted an offer, but she was calling to see if the two were “going to play golf together” while shooting, which they never got to do:
“But I believe he had an offer and was simply calling to inquire, ‘Are we going to play golf together?’ Michael Douglas also enjoys golf. We didn’t get to golf, however, because London was rainy, Marvel movies are intense, and I didn’t want to golf.”
Newton-Murray Marvel’s Relationship
It’s quite wonderful to see that Murray would get in touch with a young actress like Newton and genuinely inquire about her opinion of him joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Newton is 47 years younger than Murray, yet the young actress exudes the same regard for one of Hollywood’s greatest comedy giants.
As “a character from Janet Van Dyne’s past,” Murray’s Lord Krylar will undoubtedly interact with the rest of Team Ant-Man, including Newton’s Cassie Lang.
It will be intriguing to see whether any of that on-the-course chemistry with any prospective encounters between Newton and Murray’s characters shows up in the finished movie.
Fans have been pleading for Murray to join the Marvel Studios cast, especially after the actor hinted that he was “interested” in the world of superheroes. And it now appears that Kathryn Newton is to blame for making it happen at all.
