Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s director, Peyton Reed, hinted at an improvement with the trilogy’s third entry by comparing it to an Avengers film.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the upcoming MCU film, will be a “sci-fi” adventure that delves into the lives of Ant-Man (Scott Lang), the Wasp (Hope Van Dyne), and the Quantum Realm. Additionally, it will strengthen Kang the Conqueror’s reputation as a formidable opponent created by Jonathan Majors.
The first two films in the upcoming Ant-Man trilogy have a tendency to tell MCU stories that are less serious than, say, the Iron Man or Captain America trilogies. However, Reed has hinted that this might not be the case in the third film.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s Avengers-Like Scale
Peyton Reed, the director of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, hinted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the third movie in the trilogy will be more on the level and scale of an Avengers movie than the first two Ant-Man movies.
Reed said he was tired of the Ant-Man stories being viewed as “palate cleansers,” and he told Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige as much:
“After a huge Avengers movie, people thought, Oh, these are fun little palate cleansers. I declared that I no longer wanted to serve as the palate cleanser for the third one. I want to star in the major Avengers film. I metaphorically kicked in Kevin Feige’s door [when I told him this].”
Reed emphasized that Kang the Conqueror, “the most powerful force in the Multiverse,” would be Ant-opponent. Man’s He revealed that the antagonist will be a “formidable villain,” though his “situation is a little bit different” from the comics where he “has dominion over time”:
“There are a few antagonists in the Marvel comics universe who are all-time favorites, and I was a real Marvel comics nerd growing up. Loki, of course. From the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom Kang the Conqueror is another. I wanted to pit Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania against a really strong antagonist in this movie, so we chose Kang the Conqueror after talking with Kevin Feige and Marvel. Kang is a time traveler and has control over time in the comics. While we lead very linear lives, from birth to death, Kang doesn’t exist in the same way. His situation is a little bit different in this film, which I won’t give away to you.
The idea of pitting the smallest Avengers—in some people’s eyes, the least powerful Avengers—against the most potent force in the multiverse struck me as intriguing.
In addition, Reed elaborated on how the Quantum Realm, which she described as an “incredibly complex subatomic world,” will differ from San Francisco, the setting of the first two Ant-Man movies:
“We introduced the concept of the Quantum Realm in the first one, kind of dabbling in it, and then even more so in the second. But there are undoubtedly many questions that remain unanswered. We wanted to take a different approach and make an epic film with most of the action taking place in the Quantum Realm. The fact that the other two movies are set in San Francisco and this one has us creating an incredibly complex subatomic world with all of its environments, ecosystems, creatures, and beings were very exciting to me.”
Increasing to Avengers Levels with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Fans may be more eager to see Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania than ever before as a result of Reed’s desire for them to view Ant-Man 3 as more than just a “palate cleanser” and his suggestions that it will rank among the major Avengers franchise entries.
Similar to how Reed describes many fans interacting with the first two Ant-Man movies, the trailer depicts people not paying close attention to Lang and mistaking him for Spider-Man. Everyone else, including viewers and in-universe characters, may start to view Ant-Man as the serious hero he can be as the trilogy and the character step up to face greater threats than in the previous episodes.
