Patton Oswalt, the star of Eternals, recently discussed some previous comments he made about the film’s sequel already being planned.
After its 2021 release, Eternals immediately established itself as one of the most divisive movies in the MCU. With some of the Eternals team members captured by Arishem, the surviving team members encountering Starfox and Pip the Troll, and Dane Whitman discovering the Ebony Blade, the finale does, however, leave room for more than one plot to be potentially developed in a follow-up.
Eternals2 hasn’t received an official announcement, but in August 2022, Patton Oswalt—who played Pip the Troll in one of the film’s post-credits scenes—said that it would soon and that Chloé Zhao will return as director.
Months after making those remarks, Oswalt’s fellow Eternals actor Kumail Nanjiani questioned them, but Oswalt never responded until today.

Patton Oswalt Clarifies Reactions to Eternals 2
The Eternals star Patton Oswalt spoke when he previously said that Chloé Zhao will be directing the MCU film’s sequel in an interview with Empire Magazine.
The actor reiterated his earlier remarks and indicated that he is unsure whether there would be a sequel or not. Oswalt claimed that the only reason for his comment was that “(he) got catfished by the internet:”
“I won’t find out about a sequel until it’s too late. I fell victim to online catfishing.”
Pip the Troll is “the first motion-capture” character that Oswalt has ever played, and he also discussed how he was able to work with Harry Styles on set:
“I played my first motion-capture character in that role. With Harry Styles, I was seated next to a small wheelchair. What better way to get started?”
Eternals 2: Is It Happening?
When Eternals hit theatres, it unquestionably didn’t receive the response Marvel Studios had hoped for. It was the first movie in the whole MCU to ever acquire a “Rotten” rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Given how jam-packed the MCU docket is for the upcoming two years, it is not unreasonable to think that the divisive responses to Eternals tempered the prospects of a sequel. Nate Moore, the producer of Marvel Studios, had hinted that Harry Styles may appear in future MCU films by saying that “there are more stories to be told” about the Thanos brother.
While this does not imply that the Eternals2 will be a part of these stories, it is difficult to assume that Marvel Studios would choose to overlook the events that were set up at the conclusion of the first movie and the relationships between Starfox and the team members who were spared by Arishem.
In light of this, it seems likely that the Eternals will appear at some point in the future and that Eternals 2 will be formally announced at some point as well.
