Deadpool 3 Will Happen Hugh Jackman recently teased how Logan’s Wolverine story fits into the larger Marvel timeline alongside Deadpool 3.
The inclusion of Hugh Jackman in Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 became one of the year’s biggest comic book movie announcements, giving the Aussie star one last run as the Adamantiam-adorned mutant in his first MCU film. But, after he was cast as the film’s third cast member, following Leslie Uggams’ Blind Al, the focus shifted to one major question: how in the world is Wolverine alive in this film? PRIOR TO LOGAN, REVEALS STAR
Marvel fans will recall Wolverine’s heartfelt death in 2017’s Oscar winner Logan, a canon issue that Jackman and Ryan Reynolds addressed in a second video released after the initial announcement teasing Jackman’s MCU debut.
And, as work on the highly anticipated MCU threequel continues, Jackman has made it abundantly clear where Deadpool 3 takes place in relation to his previous Marvel project.

Hugh Jackman Reveals Deadpool 3 and Logan Release Dates
Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine and is a newcomer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, discussed where Deadpool 3 fits into the Marvel timeline alongside his previous X-Men film, Logan, on The Empire Film Podcast.
When asked how Logan director James Mangold felt about Jackman’s return, he said he was “really cool about it” and that Deadpool 3 “took place before” Logan, much to Mangold’s relief:
“He was actually quite calm about it. I did tell him that it happened before our film, so I wasn’t going to mess with the claws poking out of the grave. So he was relieved, and he completely understood. He thought it was a brilliant idea.”
Nobody “wanted to screw with” how Logan ended, Jackman said, noting how proud he was of his work and explaining that he was committed to finishing the role until August 2022. Later, he teased his enthusiasm for the MCU threequel, saying that he might have “more fun on that movie” than any of his previous projects:
Jackman: “None of us wanted to mess with it. I was very proud of that film and what we accomplished, and it felt just right. And for five years, I was really, honestly, I can tell you, kind of a hard done, I was like, this is it. It was August 14, I was driving, and it just hit me like that. I just thought it would be a lot of fun. I’m sure I’ll have more fun making that movie than anything else I’ve ever done.”
Empire: “What year is it? 14th of August…”
Jackman: “This coming year. And on August 13, I told myself, ‘I’m never going to play that part again, I promise you.'”
Deadpool 3 Addresses Difficult Timeline Issues
The introduction of the Multiverse, along with dozens of legacy characters and other newcomers, has already resulted in a number of timeline issues for the Multiverse Saga.
The first of these issues was addressed in Spider-Man: No Way Home, with its five villains being saved from the moments before their deaths, while Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s heroes arrived from their “present day” situations. Loki will cause even more havoc after the Multiverse is shattered at the end of Season 1, and Season 2 in 2023 will address the ramifications of Sylvie’s murder of He Who Remains.
Now, Jackman says that these timeline issues will resurface with his return in Deadpool 3, though he emphasizes that Wolverine’s death in Logan will not be affected by this change. This is also the second time James Howlett has dealt with multiple timelines, following his blast to the past in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, but this time he will be in for an even more bizarre adventure as he joins the MCU.
According to rumors, Loki’s Time Variance Authority will play a major role in Deadpool 3 as different timelines are explored, giving Deadpool and Logan a chance to see just how vast the Multiverse truly is together. While the only plot details revealed so far hint at a fish-out-of-water story for the Merc with a Mouth, only time will tell how this new story fits in with Logan, the MCU, and the rest of the X-Men saga.
