Why Punisher on Disney+ Will Remain Dark and Brutal

Many people have expressed worries about Born Again, specifically the worry that it would become too “Disneyfied” and cheery in comparison to the grim and gritty plot of Netflix’s Daredevil. Fans of a dark, brutal, and adult character like the Punisher will definitely experience the same anxieties.

As the actor made it plain he would only want to return if the role would be “dark… [and] gritty enough] to give the audience “what they deserve,” Jon Bernthal’s comeback itself provides some promise on that front.

“The question is simply: If they do it, will we be able to do it correctly? Will it get dark enough? Will it be grimy enough? Are we going to offer the fans and the people to who this character means a lot what they deserve?”

Bernthal’s return to Born Again and the possibility of his own Disney+ spin-off make it clear that Marvel Studios is in good hands with the Punisher. Even yet, it’s not a guarantee that each program will be TV-MA (R-rated). After all, there are many other methods to convey a gloomy mood without violence, profanity, and blood.

Born Again’s framing of Daredevil on Netflix as a soft reboot has drawn criticism, particularly after confirmation of the initial character’s recasting. But, The Punisher might be simpler to remake given that it was much less well-liked and without any side characters as adored as Foggy and Karen from Daredevil.

Spider-Man 4 is anticipated to be impacted by Kingpin’s control of the city government in Daredevil: Born Again, along with a number of other street-level films and television shows. It is simple to understand how this plot may perhaps extend into their own projects now that The Punisher is confirmed and White Tiger is rumored to be in the Daredevil revival.

The Punisher’s first two seasons are available on Disney+ right now. When Daredevil: Born Again debuts in the spring of 2024, Jon Bernthal’s superhero will return.
