These 3 Disney+ shows will be the basis of Captain Marvel 2

Samuel L. Jackson, who starred in The Marvels and Secret Invasion, identified the Disney+ programs that would be referenced in the upcoming Captain Marvel 2.

The Marvels, directed by Nia DaCosta, will mark Carol Danvers’ return to the big screen after more than four years since her previous solo outing.

With characters like Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel joining the fun, Captain Marvel 2 will be a cooperative effort “akin to the first Avengers” movie, in contrast to her predecessor, which may have been mostly a solo drama about the beginnings of Brie Larson’s Kree warrior-turned-MCU-hero.

As a result, viewers will need to do some prep work before watching The Marvels to fully understand the backstories of these newly added broadcast characters who appear in the superpowered sequel.

Before Captain Marvel 2: What to watch

The following three Disney+ programs should be watched before The Marvels enters theaters, according to The Marvels actor Samuel L. Jackson, who was quoted in the most recent issue of Empire Magazine:

WandaVision

Due to its debut of Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, WandaVision, the first Disney+ series from Marvel Studios, is included on our list of must-watch for the Captain Marvel sequel.

The SHIELD scientist found her own superpowers while examining the illusion Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff had thrown over the whole town of Westview. As a result, she became the Marvel hero known as Photon.

The difficult connection between Monica and Maria, who is played by Lashana Lynch in Captain Marvel, will undoubtedly be at the center of this MCU blockbuster because Maria is Carol’s best friend and wingman.

Ms. Marvel

Ms. Marvel, featuring Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, provided insight into the beginnings of another hero who will play a significant role in the events of The Marvels.

This coming-of-age comedy marked Vellani’s on-screen debut and featured an Avengers superfan (both in and outside of the Marvel universe) coping with familial expectations, the pressures of high school, and developing into Jersey City’s very own adolescent superhero.

Ms. Marvel appears to be the closest thing to a straight prologue to the impending MCU sequel given that Kamala is/was a Captain Marvel mega-fan who was visible throughout the series and Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers even made an appearance in the post-credits sequence.

Secret Invasion

And Jackson’s most recent endeavor was the impending “espionage thriller” series, Secret Invasion.

Since it hasn’t yet premiered at the time of writing, it’s still unclear exactly how this streaming program will relate to The Marvels. The Skurlls at the core of the “invasion” were initially featured in Captain Marvel, so the show will undoubtedly be a factor in the Brie Larson-starring sequel.

The Marvels will feature Jackson’s Nick Fury, and the actor claims that Secret Invasion “has to happen so that The Marvels can happen,” noting that the two “are connected in an interesting sort of way.”

Pre-Watch List for The Marvels

Even if Jackson didn’t put them on his must-see list before The Marvels, there are additional movies that fans who want a little extra credit can enjoy before the Captain Marvel sequel hits theaters.

Captain Marvel should be at the top of that list, as this year’s blockbuster introduced audiences to Brie Larson’s portrayal of the popular Marvel superhero for the first time. Although much of this interplanetary adventure took place in the 1990s, it introduced viewers to many important themes for continuity, including the Rambeau family and the Skrulls.

The Avengers: Infinity War, where the character was hinted at in the post-credits scene, Avengers: Endgame, where Carol joined the Avengers and faced off against Thanos’ army, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, where Captain Marvel made an unexpected guest appearance alongside Simu Liu, Benedict Wong, and Akwafina, will all be available to stream ahead of The Marvels.
